Cinda Firestone Fox has more recently become renowned for her work penning and directing Broadway hits including the likes of musical comedy Family Fortune, however, her early career was quite different to this. Following her younger years as something of an activist at schools and colleges, Cinda Firestone Fox met and subsequently became assistant to acclaimed director Emile de Antonio. However, it was only a short time after she started work for him that she took the opportunity to create the documentary Attica, which followed and documented the prison take-over in Attica that led to the deaths of many prisoners.
Only 23 at the time of creating the documentary, Cinda Firestone Fox went on to create 3 other acclaimed documentaries. Collectively known as the Trilogy of Aging, the documentaries South Beach, Mountain People, and Retirement looked at how different cultures and different people from around the world viewed retirement. Attica and the Trilogy of Aging have recently been rereleased due to public demand – Attica was initially a success before falling foul to publication and distribution problems but N.Y. Public Library and N.Y. Women in Film and Television worked to bring the documentary back to the public eye.
As well as writing hard hitting and successful documentaries, Cinda Firestone Fox has also penned several screenplays including Madame, Te Quiero, and Fox Hunt and a number of Broadway musicals; Family Fortune, Questionable Quest, and Down to Earth. Even now she finds time to fight to save the sea turtles’ nesting grounds that are found on beach near her Puerto Rican home.
